Using qualitative textual analysis, it examines protagonist Henry’s journey from physical to spiritual love and the psychological suffering he endures following Catherine’s death. The research highlights love as a complex emotion often accompanied by loss and pain. It also identifies a gap for future studies to explore other factors beyond love that contribute to such suffering in the novel.
